"Bates Motel" the Final Scene? Bring in the Bulldozers

On September 22, 2009, the Board of Building and Safety Commissioners unanimously voted to declare the long neglected property at 4301 Sunset Blvd. corner of Bates Ave. a "Public Nuisance". That allows building code enforcement to move ahead with demolition of the building. This usually takes 2-3 months.
Building & Safety hearing

Clare Bronofski, the attorney for the owners of the Sunset Pacific Motel appealed to the commissioners for more time claiming she was just hired by the Michigan based company. When asked what the owner's plans for the property were she admitted "there is no current plan." She did say they now have a security guard who comes by 4 times a day, and the building's manager said he "goes to the property most weeks three times a week."

City Attorney Bill Larsen reported on the 10 year fight to abate the nuisance and that even after the property was fenced and boarded the site continued as a magnet for crime citing the character of the characters who inhabit the area around the property has gotten so bad that some demand $2  for safe passage from those merely walking on the sidewalk adjacent to the building. Representatives of the Jewish Community Center  which is across Bates Ave. from the site said they can no longer use their main entrance because of the danger to their 600 patrons including 100 children in their pre-school.

Since the last attempt to rehab the forlorn building as a "high end hotel with a restaurant/bar lounge" failed after getting zoning approval in June 2006, the property has continued its downward slide. The commission received over 230 letters supporting demolition including one from Police Chief Bratton, which Commission President Marsha Brown said she had never seen in other similar cases. AUTRY EXPANSION REQUEST WITHDRAWN - 8/10/09
Citing unwillingness to comply with requests made by the Board of Referred powers, endless delays due to opposition, and  financial uncertanties, Autry National Center President, John Gray, announced that the Autry was withdrawing its application for expansion by 129,000sq ft. at its Griffith Park location and extension of its $1 a year lease for its 12 acre site.

The decision appears to be a direct result of a hearing in City Council chambers on June 30th, packed with over 200 supporters and opponents of the then current proposal, when the Board of Referred Powers deferred a decision on the Autry Expansion for 4 weeks...later extended indefinitely.
After two hours of testimony from both sides, the five City Councilmembers (Hahn, Reyes, Cardenas, Parks & Rosendahl) who make up the board, all said that the Autry should sit down with those who want the Southwest Museum to remain a viable museum and work out a written agreement.
The Autry took the position at the hearing that the issue of the Southwest Museum's future should not be considered in amending the Autry's $1 a year lease for Griffith Park land.
A key player in the hearing was Councilmember Jose Huizar who urged the board not to make a decision until there was an enforceable written agreement protecting the Southwest and the promises made by the Autry when it took over the Southwest Museum and its collection.

On August 7, 2009 the City Council passed a ban on new billboards including supergraphics and digital billboards. This was not the comprehensive ordinance that is still under consideration, but a tactical measure to avert consequences of a possibly adverse court ruling expected while the City Council was in summer recess.

May 26th the City Council deferred action on the proposed Sign Ordinance. Instead they passed another 90 day moratorium on new signs. Click Here for more info and to see the GGPNC's Area Billboard Survey and Community Impact Statements plus other links. E-mail us with your thoughts at:
